Merry Christmas Stunners!

I am flummoxed by my D810 card slot set up.  I want to to shoot RAW to the CF and JPEG to the SD

I have it set up in the shooting menu as follows:

Primary slot selection:  CF

Secondary slot function RAW+JPEG  / >  RAW primary - JPEG secondary.

The computer shows the imagines are 36 MB NEF files on the SD and I always have two cards in the camera.

What step am I missing?

Cheers!

Just guessing but maybe if you only use one card it makes that the "primary" card and now you're just shooting RAW. It's not so much as setting primary or secondary but saying when both are available this is the primary.

My camera is a D800 thus things may have altered in the operation of software when it was upgraded to the D8100 that you own.

I have NO expertise in this area.

This sort of stuff ever frustrates me when it seems your request is a simple one but may contradict some other basic priority in software.. hmm.

There are just too many possibilities for me to contemplate though I spent some time considering just a few in a bid to either further understanding or add to the confusion of simple logic...!!!!!

I have selected  CF slot as primary

Secondary slot function RAW +JPEG

With a card in each slot  CF and SD   If I fire the shutter the camera writes the image to both cards   NEF (RAW) to CF      and JPEG to SD

With only EITHER CF   OR    SD   card   in the camera   both RAW +JPEG files are written to whichever card was in the camera at the time.

I used my lap top to determine that which was written to the cards... for even with both RAW and JPEG images on one card, when beamed up on the camera`s LCD there was no hint that there were two versions available on the card... as in advancing between two images identified as such thus my lap top seems to be the only way of interrogating the card to show that which was written to it...hmm.  Though I suspect one`s PC has to be able to read NEF (RAW)..for the both types of file to be confirmed as present...?

Have you updated your firmware to the latest version ?
I believe I had that too with my D810 with the stock firmware ( release firmware ).

Firmware is update, but I am thinking it must be software related -

I assume that you have formatted both cards in-camera and it sees them both ( if one isn't detected you won't be able to select it under the Format card menu option )

Thanks for your help!  Yes, both cards are recognizable and format-able.  I can pull images from either card, both offering RAW despite the settings as outlined in the OP.

Very weird situation you've got there :D

I use RAW on both, and it works fine.

Switched to RAW + JPEG and it also works.

If you're not bored to re-configure your camera's settings, you can try a hard reset, you've probably stumbled upon a software bug ( it could be rare, because it might be triggered by a specific combination of settings for example )

Bill nailed it - I had image quality set to RAW.  Thought RAW + JPEG saved both files side by side on each card.

Switching to RAW + JPEG FINE writes RAW to the CF and JPEG to the SD.

Thanks for helping me find this missing step!
