I saw this guy perched atop a tree from about 200 yards away. He was not far from where my red shouldered hawk was yesterday. Usually when I see these guys they are flying at supersonic speeds and are gone before you know it. The sun was not my friend as I took a few shots looked and noticed that the sun was behind it and cast a hard shadow over the entire bird so I immediatetly back tracked and worked my way around him and was able to get the following shot ISO 160 500MM F/6.3 1/1000 I tried to get into better position and he was gone in a split second.

You're learning their behavior Jamie - that's really good.  The image - it's a pretty heavy crop, but I think your next will be closer.  Congrats on your first!

Beautiful bird. Not bad with only 50mm.

Appreciate the effort you put into capturing the image... I have been trying off and on to get a decent pic of a large hawk that semi regularly appears and have yet to manage to capture anything worthwhile, so hats off to you Jamie..(-:

Nice capture but realistically too far away for high IQ.
