My first time taking photos of surfers...during Christmas week in La Jolla, California (San Diego area).  I hope you get a sense of how fun and action-packed it is.  It's a tough job to fill the frame and keep them there, during their unpredictable moves up and down the waves.  The relatively long distance from my beach position and tracking issues resulted in not the best of focus, and exposure settings were a challenge (I used mostly Auto ISO...these were all in the late morning to early afternoon with sun in and out).  I learned that some surfers face the wave as they surf, others face the beach with their backs to the wave wall (better photo opp).  Interesting.  Enjoy!

D500 with handheld 200-500 lens, various settings.  CC welcome.

Looking out at the snow I suspect there will be no one surfing in these parts...(-:   1&5 for me I suspect like wildlife catching light and detail in the face of the creature is generally a primary desire... Nice work Mark, thanks for posting.

I don't have any experience with critiquing surfing photos, but I like these.  Really good stuff Mark.  Once again, congrats on the use of the new kit.  It seems like it was a good investment for you; lots of fun!

Good shots Mark. I am or used to be a surfer so FYI if you surf right foot forward you are goofy foot and prefer going left and facing the wave. Left foot forward is regular foot and you prefer going right and facing the wave. Surfing backside or with your back to the wave is more difficult. Very few switch feet. You are goofy or regular all the time. Also surfers are trying to make big spray when they rip sharp turns and like to include the spray in the image.

That’s so interesting John. Looks like we have both types in these images. I’ll remember to keep an eye out for the spray!
