These old smokestacks at a once-large steel mill (now scaled-down, producing rolled steel) caught my eye in the early morning.  I liked the way they all lined up and formed this pattern.  The sun was still fairly low in the sky, and although this is more or less monochrome, the colors remind me of rusty, old, steel.  CC welcome

I hear you Geedee. Just a study in patterns and light, but not very compelling otherwise. Thanks!

Rusty is right!

A hard subject to turn into art, Mark.

Its all about the chimney shapes, but they're just vertical lines, so not very interesting.

If they were doing something it might work better (?) e.g. belching poisonous smoke or electing a pope or something ;)

I think the texture of the rust on the stacks might be interesting, but I dunno how you'd get close enough to bring in out fully.

Any chance of getting up on the roof of that building ?

You know Mark, the problem for me isn't the vertical lines, in fact, it's that verticality that makes this an interesting image (including the siding on the building.)  But the the most interesting thing about this image is in your title, namely, rust.  You've got to get that rust to pop, which would mean working with your colour and contrast sliders in Lr.  This is an image where the masking capability of Photoshop could really help you out.

Kerry, So I tried some adjustments in LR with Orange slider in LR, and the contrast.  I think I like this 2nd version better than the first!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Rod, it is pretty well fenced off and my fence-climbing days are behind me....and even if I got atop that roof, I'm not sure it would hold!

Hi Mark.

mmmmm....no.  Harold Lloyd more or less covered all that death defyification stuff. ;)

Stay on the ground
