It was suggested that I get the sigma 85mm 1.4 art lens. It is supposed to be one of the sharpest lenses. Anyone have any experience with this lens?

I have no experience with it, but I have heard that it is an excellent portrait lens. Is that your intended usage?

Steve Perry recommends having a 100+ mm macro lens for portraits and close ups. Something like the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens or the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras. Both are stabilized which I am reading is important for the D850.

I did not even notice that the sigma was not stabilized.. thank you for pointing that out.. stabilization is kind of important..lol  I have the Nikkor 105MM 2.8     I can use that

That counts!

I also have the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 micro. I never thought of it as a portrait lens. Learn something new every day! Would that still be a recommendation on a DX sensor camera (157.5mm equivalent?)

I was thinking about attending one of Steve's workshops in Costa Rica and on his list of what to bring he said I also HIGHLY recommend a macro lens – we’re going after quite a bit of wildlife that’s anywhere from dime to dollar size. Stick with a focal length of 100mm or longer. (Note – in a pinch you can certainly get by with most super zooms for macro work).

I think he was thinking of things like frogs and ... Here is a link if you are interested: https://backcountryg...raphy-workshop/ and this one on the +- of using a macro lens for portraiture: https://fstoppers.co...traiture-129330

Fyi - I think I have read or heard Tony as well as others recommend the 70-200 2.8 as their favorite lens ( most flattering ) for portraits.

John, I think Tony was not impressed with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR complaining of focus breathing though I think there is now a VRII version of this lens...?
