Yeah, Tony's work is glorious !

Check out this link on getting a dark background. ("the third free option" in the article).

Looks like your mask is too "feathered" and is giving a halo on his back while affecting his head and making it dark.

You look to be 90% there with your edit.  The great thing about masks ir that you can paint either black or white to modify it over and over.

Striking photo! In the After, the subject looks a little too dark. He or she lacks pop. Could you brush more light along the body and right leg? I agree with Roderick about the halo along the creature's back.

 

I feel inadequate to make these comments given I struggle to get anything even close to a photo like this. Well done.

Without taking out my scanning electron microscope, I'd say it is pretty damn good !

The bird really jumps out of the photo
