This weekend I went to my first ever airshow at the Miramar Naval Air Station near San Diego.  It was fantastic seeing (and hearing) the US Navy Blue Angels (F/A-18 Hornets) and another group called the Patriots Jet Team (former Blue Angels pilots) flying in tight formation, and roaring past!  Talk about tracking!  Probably not the best venue to take super-fast action shots for the first time either, but I set forth armed with my rented 80-400mm f/4.5 lens and camera set to Auto Focus and Continuous Shutter (Group focus).  Lots of traditional-type shots, but hey I gotta take 'em at least once, right?

These are 9 of my favorites, with settings.

C&C welcome!

DSC 6411 (Patriots in formation w smoke): 400mm, 1/2000 sec., f/4, ISO 100

DSC 6452 (Patriots, dive run): same as above

DSC 7178 (Blue Angel solo): 400, 1/1600 sec, f/5.6, ISO 160

DSC 7273 (Blue Angels formation with smoke): 400, 1/1600 sec., f/5.6, ISO 160

DSC 7274 (Blue Angels tight formation): same

DSC 7278 (Blue Angels abstract): same

DSC 7312 (Blue Angels B&W): same

DSC 7531 (Blue Angel with vapor): 310mm, 1/2500 sec., f/5.6, ISO 160

DSC 7562 (Blue Angels silhouette): 300mm, 1/2500 sec., f/5.6, ISO 160

Great series of action pics Mark you sure captured plenty of detail, great framing too, and with a lens that is one you were not used to... impressive. Thanks for posting.

Nice set.  You captured a great amount of detail in the aircraft.

Smashing job, Mark.

I like 'em.  With no.3 is it possible to raise the shadows/ brighten it a tad ?  Dark blue against a bright sky won't be easy ;)

Thanks Geedee, David, and Rod. With continuous shutter there were a lot of images to sort through, and thankfully some were pretty well in focus.

Rod, I used the Shadow slider in LR and the airplane is much easier to see (below)...

I've added one more of a fighter just about ready to taxi to the runway (400mm, f/11, 1/1000 sec, ISO 160).  I cropped in from the original image that was wingtip to wingtip.  The story that emerges for me is of a ground crew member's stewardship of the aircraft they service, standing ready!

Exciting!! Great shots, especially with an unfamiliar lens. My only CC would be to bring up the brightness of the planes like you did in your second post.

Brought back memories. There is a Navy base just a few miles from my home, but it was closed several years ago. They used to have an annual air show. The Blue Angels and Thunderbirds would fly right over my house. Awe inspiring and noisy.

Top stuff, Mark.

I like the two pilots in the F18 shot and the head haze coming of the F35 (?) is a great touch.  I really like the composition.

It might not work, but you could try a LR exposure brush on the cockpit area to get more detail on the pilot.

Great shots Mark, it's as if you were flying right next to them, love the black and white too!
