great pic!, no, I take that back     Awesome Pic!!!    I have not see an osprey compose with its wings like that.. I like it and the fish well, that is just nasty.. lol  on my screen it looks a little noisy in the shadow of the osprey's right shoulder and body.   I keep looking at that pick and just keep saying to myself.. man they are a powerful bird!    That is a big fish to pull out of the water. it probably weighs more than the Osprey.

Yeah.... Awesome indeed, amazing detail, though for me just a tad gory  B&W might just take the blood and guts out of it to some degree..?

Thank you. This is the male Osprey with a fish for the chicks. He eats the head and then brings the rest back to the nest. I think he makes sure the fish is dead so it won't flop around on the young chicks. Soon he will start bringing live fish back to the nest so they can learn to eat it themselves. Geedee I am so used to seeing him with a hafl eaten fish that I don't notice it anymore. I can tone down the blood in the color version.

The colour one for me, John, in spite of the blood.

These osprey photographs you're posting are a whole new level of quality and detail.

Beautiful stuff

One more version with a bit of extra nr in the shadows and turned down the gore factor on the blood?

Hoo Haw, fantastic image.  I choose colour, absolutely.  Sure the fish is headless and bloody but nothing is taking my eyes of this predator's eyes.  The bloody, torn fish is an interesting detail but it is not the picture.  I love this picture, not despite the blood but partly because of it.  This is the natural world.  Really well done, John.

P.S. I do like the second colour version a bit better for the colour balance.
