Don`t click on external links Rod  though gotta wonder how anyone can determine "fake" given PP is so very much a part of photography and making pics POP seems to be the main aim...?    I suspect one mans fake is another mans art .... (-:  Perhaps a tricky subject, a bit of a hand grenade like the thinking of the Canikon fundamentalists...?  (-:

Many Canon cameras have/had a feature setting called "Add image verification data (on/off)" it was for use with the optional Canon Original Data Security Kit.

The :EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 5D, EOS 50D, EOS 40D, EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS 20Da, EOS 450D/DIGITAL Rebel XSi, EOS 1000D/DIGITAL Rebel XS  all had the option to enable that.

The option wrote a fingerprint into the image file that let you verify the images files with the security kit checking for tampering/editing.

Canon security kit part number was OSK-E3 and it was on the expensive side I think it was meant for use by courts or something similar.

Would be neat if every image could be checked for editing and especially how much editing was done!

Just because you're paranoid, Geedee, it doesn't mean that they're not after you...

Its a link off bbc.co.uk

That's interesting, Peter.

Didn't know that about Canon.

Most reputable publications and websites require the RAW file to be sent. Am I missing something or does that eliminate the fake photo problem?

Bob

Note: I didn't read the article yet so sorry if my comment was covered there.

Might work unless the original was shot as a jpg, not everyone shoots in the raw.

Or the camera used does not use dng as its raw format.

Pentax, Ricoh, Casio,Samsung, and Leica can all output DNG format natively, a format which can also be output by Lightroom.

As far as I know, the places that specify the photographer submit a RAW file with a JPG will not accept the JPG without the RAW file to compare to.

A lot of the fakers don't mind if their chicanery is discovered because they just want to poison people's impression of some person or event.

Its about devaluing the whole idea of truthful reporting.

When one aspect of their false narrative is exposed they just concoct another lie.

There's every difference in the world between photo editing and photo faking.  I think anyway

When in the process of insuring an object a while back Digitally created images were not acceptable by the ins co it had to have been photographed on film... but that was 2001, I guess things have moved on since then..

Rod.... Ahhhh.. from that which you type, I am guessing your link may have been related to someone who makes a living creating "sensationalised" fictional stories for the tabloid press around whatever kind of pictures he manages to capture by ANY means possible which he can more than justify to HIMSELF...?  It takes all kinds I guess..

As for my dislike of clicking on links... my laptop created issues as the result of clicking on a link posted here AND by someone in our closed group.... I doubt the issue arose out of malice more by accident and in no way directly related to the individual who posted the link.... it`s just the kinda world in which we operate...?

No worries, Geedee.

As I say, its a link to the bbc.co.uk news site so if you want, you can make your way there .

The article is more of a general discussion about fake pictures with examples.

The message being, I suppose, that we live in a world where you have to be skeptical about what's put into the media, printed or digital.

As was written on a wall somewhere:

"   the paranoiacs are after me "!!!

Too true Rod, when the 2010 BBC wildlife photographer of the year was stripped of the award when his pic of a wolf jumping over a gate was suspected as being a set-up with a semi tame creature...

The person I was referring to and mistakenly thought your link led to appeared in a TV show about his efforts to make money from  stories that he seemingly created to fit round his images...and then sold to the press.

Call my decision not to open links a habit that works, perhaps better that making a mistake in opening a link that may just have potential to create issues as it has before..
