These were both taken on the same afternoon about an hour before sunset. It had rained during the day and was still overcast but the sun was breaking through in golden streaks. Tripod, mm, 1/2000, f6.3, auto ISO-320, +0.7 ev, 500 F4E + 1.4III extender, D500. cc

Basic LR edits in LR and light sharpening in PS. NR applied to bg in PS. I added a bit of canvas to the top and rhs in #2.

Backgrounds make such a difference to photographs.

Just a hint of water or sky can lift a shot.

I've been practicing on jackdaws in flight and every pic had the worst wing position possible - dreadful ! :(

But a good reminder that good BIFs don't just happen.

Thanks John

Thanks guys. I agree with you about the bg Rod. it is much more interesting with something other than sky in the bg. As Steve used to tell me " sky is soooo boring ".  In an ideal world I would have had better eye contact in the first but I liked the bg enough to go with it anyway.

Yes, very nice John! Sky can be boring, but...add a some clouds or  storm clouds (for me that's magic!)

Thanks Doug. I agree that clouds can change boring to interesting. I actually googled how to add clouds and came up blank. Lots on how to improve.

Thanks Doug. I agree that clouds can change boring to interesting. I actually googled how to add clouds and came up blank. Lots on how to improve.

When out shooting BIF look for interesting cloud patterns and photograph just that.  When home extract the bird from the boring background and paste him on the more interesting background.   Works best when the background is shot under the same light as the subject.  This technique also works for blurring the background as well.  Learning all the select tools (quick select, magic wand, color select, focus select and refine edge) are essential to advanced photoshop techniques.

And just to overload you, another link, this one's to one of Tony's videos on Youtube.

Photoshop Essentials: Layers And Masks.

I can't post the link directly because of some problem with my work PC but if you search for the above you should hit it.

He works on a picture of Stockholm.
