Ricoh scaling back its consumer imaging business and may kill off  brands like Pentax entirely.

Industry shakeout due to smartphones continues.

Official statement suggests this is just a rumor.
"RICOH is focusing its resource on the high added value products such as
PENTAX and GR that are appreciated by the existing users and photo
hobbyists. RICOH is also a market leader of input devices in the VR or
AR market with its "RICOH THETA" where we can see rapid growth, and will
keep on expanding the business even more in this field. In addition,
RICOH will develop and expand the imaging business in the solution
business field for corporate, by creating new market utilizing its own
camera technology."

So basically is that they are saying is that they are killing off the cheap Optio WG PS line (GoPro clone kinda) and focusing on the higher end, i.e. the Theta,Pentax SLRs and GR cams.
Pentax just announced 2 new lenses and entire road map, so unlike Samsung they are not quitting just yet.

Just yet - keyword ;)

Fighting now with GoPro is a suicide so this move was obvious.

Unfortunately, or fortunately - hell knows - smartphones will win and not pro DSLR's will vanish at some point. I can see everywhere that those smartphone cameras are so awesome. Designed for portraits, designed for night photography, designed for landscapes, designed for macro, designed for astrophoto, 20x zoom, perfect bokeh, aperture at 2.0. As you could bypass physics. You can't shrink normal lens into 3mm wide area with the same quality of the image. You can say it will be the same but some will know it is a lie and marketing bull sith. Some...

I'm shooting events and for every DSLR there are like 20 smartphones. And usually 20-30% of those DSLRs are pros.

Maybe I'll write some similar post bout the future of photography and astrophotography in a few days cause it all looks pretty sad.

Well, Nikon is in similar situation. So restructuring is the key here. For now, I don't think there is anything to worry about.

I see it as taking a snapshot vs. making a photograph. While some people have made beautiful photographs with a smartphone, most posted images one sees taken by a smartphone are appalling. And nobody cares. But, it is the smartphone or the picture taker that causes the problem?

They will. K1 is awesome (speaking from my own experience) and K3 II as well.
