Was chatting to a friend of mine who photographs horse racing meetings.

he tells me in the past few weeks he's lost a 7D MK.2 which was trampled by a horse and a 6D to rain ingestion.

Expensive...

One wrong move for any of us. I don't carry insurance but probably should.

€800.00 + to fix the 7D mk.2  He can't even get the lens off it..

I told him the old "bag of uncooked rice" trick to use on the 6D.  Fingers crossed.

I suggested he claim on his house insurance but how do you explain the massive hoof print on the camera body??

I won't pass on your comment, just yet, Steve.  Its still "too soon" as they say, and he's a big lad and packs a punch ;)

All my gear used to be insured, the insurance was a fortune. When I tried to put the 400mm 2.8 onto the policy, they ramped the price up along with making it a £500 excess, this meant that half the stuff on the policy I wouldn't be able to claim for. In the end I told them to stick their policy where the sun doesn't shine.

I've now got the 400mm on my house insurance and it's covered for every eventuality, I pay an extra £3 a month which is a bargain and piece of mind.

House insurance is the way to go, at least on this side of the Atlantic.

I pay about 40 CDN for separate cost replacement insurance for my camera gear. I told them, I don't want a dollar amount, if something happens I want the lens or the camera etc replaced regardless of price/depreciation etc.

I added mine to my renters insurance and have everything covered from me breaking it to theft regardless if it was in my house.

I checked with my agent about adding it to homeowners. He suggested not doing that as there is generally a higher deductible and you don't want to risk raising the rates on the whole policy due to a loss of camera equipment. He said a better choice is an added valuables policy which will cost about $120 per year for $10,000 coverage. Waiting to see the fine print.
