So yesterday I went to Croft race circuit to photograph the 'Jack Frost Rally'.

Even though it's a rally, it's all tarmac based.

I've never done anything like this so it was a huge learning curve but great fun (if a little wet and cold). I really wanted to get some panning shots, which are much easier said than done but I found a sweet spot using a shutter speed of 1/60.

I used my 5Dmk3 and 400 f/2.8

I like the orange Ford best Matt. The compression of the left rear tire into the pavement and the blur looks cool and coveys the action. The car fills the frame nicely, and the headlights add a lot. Nice shots!

Great shots Matt. I really like the sharp focus with the motion blur. The images convey speed and sound. Orange my favorite as well.

Had another look at this series of pics Matt, though this time round I put my petrol head  into a more critical gear and wondered if the MkII Escort was the favourite of most folk as it seems to have less reflection in the windscreen and elsewhere than the others....?

This caused me to also wonder if a polariser might have cancelled that out to some degree.

Thought a bit more about that, and guess that a polariser has to be adjusted relative to the angle of the sun to work at it`s best thus seems less than ideal while panning..?

It also seems to have been a bit of a dull day so the use of a polariser would have pushed up the ISO....hmm. And one other thing having only tried once to use a polariser once at a old car event and in the hope of reducing glare/reflections... it showed up the zebra zone in the windscreen....

Yeah... I should do less typing and more pushing of the shutter button...!!!

Thanks for the reply geedee. The weather was dreadful, either raining really hard will dull flat light, or just dull flat light. I'll be going back later in the year so I'll see how I do then.

Yup, it's an MG Metro 6R4 and it was an absolute beast! Well, until he smashed the back end off

Thanks Matt - great great photos.

600 bhp out of what is essentially a roller skate ?

I see nothing wrong with that....

Car guy here...gotta' love it!!  Seeing this class of car, I see Ford is going to finally offer the all wheel drive, 350hp Focus in the states.  Talk about a pocket rocket!!

Cool shots Matt, I missed these and have only just found them, as a seasoned motor sports shooter I appreciate how hard good shots are to get at meets. Nice stuff mate.
