Well one thing you could do for research is check out a site like Dreamstime, look at the guys who have 30k+ images in thier folder see what they are getting accepted all the time in order to get a good idea/feel for what that site is moving.

This is a good tip.  It took me awhile to figure out how to look the stuff up.  But now that I see how to do it, it's a good resource.

Tnx

I'd be all for a stock photography thread/topic too :)

What most of us like to shoot, the landscape/scenic/nature type images do not do so well at all on microstock since there are millions of similars of just about everything out there. Really difficult to come up with something in a unique way not already covered.

Might want to give Alamy a try, they seem to accept on technical perfection and not content so much, no idea how sales might go with them.

http://www.alamy.com/

And don't forget model/property releases are needed for any people and property (including recognizable animals) that might appear in your images

There is a model release app I have not bought yet called
Easy Release - Model Releases by ApplicationGap it is approved for use by Getty Images, iStockPhoto, Alamy, Shutterstock and others it is avalable for both iOS on iTunes and Android on Google play.

There is the scary part walking up to people and asking them to sign releases!

Thanks Guys, Alven thats exactly what I needed. I agree, we do need a thread for Stock photography Q&A, and critique.

Hay I just noticed the tag under my name says Members instead of Stunners.

Guess I am special!

Your also your not technically allowed to add any sharpening , in camera by default or in lightroom, when you submit to Alamy

I thought that there where only Stunners... @ Peter. Have you not bought the book or something?

Stock Photography, they want the very very best and will pay you 20 cents for the honor.
Stock photography is one reason it's hard to make a living as a photographer...

@ Dave,

Bought the SDP book, that is how I got approved to join SDP forums and the FP page.

Spotted several others now saying Members instead of Stunners too.

I thought that there where only Stunners... @ Peter. Have you not bought the book or something?

@ Jeste

your are absolutely correct about the crowdsourced microstock model.

Fortunately traditional RM stock still exists and is not doing too bad, just hard to break in.

For those willing to try it ImageBrief has a different view on doing things

Buyers put up requests for images, the type of license and what they are willing to pay.

Photographers submit images to the briefs, best image(s) the buyer likes wins the bid.

If the price is stated as negotiable you might have do do some negotiation through the briefs assigned account manager.

http://www.imagebrief.com/

They do want to do a quick portfolio review before accepting you as a contributor, so it helps to have an on-line portfolio.

And you can select to receive only RM briefs or RM and low paying RF briefs.

They have recently revamped things and I am still trying to find my way around there again.

I make about 120 every time I sell one canvas. Just sayin.
Needless to say that's still pretty cool Dave and over time you will probably do well as you gain a following. Nothing worth doing comes easy.

Steve the problem is finding people that want to buy prints etc, and another problem which is making it visible to the people buy it in the first place.

Any suggestions?

Agree, microstock can work, but is a lot of work for not much gain.

Just look at Yuri Arcurs the supposed king of microstock, he runs a huge studio with a large staff producing massive volumes of work.

Lise Gagne is another one who has made huge microstock sales over the years, here is a 9 year old BlackStar article about her. She also works out of a large commercial studio generating microstock as a full time job.

And the real traditional stock agencies are very difficult to break into.

Problem these days is there are at least 2 cameras for every person on the planet,  everyone is taking snapshots and posting them on-line usually for free. There is just a huge glut of images of every kind.

If you want to sell prints and not do it yourself their is something called Fine Art America (I've looked at it but not signed up, might be a conflict of interest for me until I am sure I am clear of a current publishing contract.)

They handle the sales, printing and delivery, not sure how much of a cut the photographers get.

The stalls at fairs, markets, and local galleries & shops can get you the bigger returns on each sale, but again you are out slogging your wares trying to sell. And it usually ends up tying up all your weekends trying to do the fair circuits.

Dang there has got to be an easier way to make money than all this annoying work thing.
