Good place to share your discovered configurations in Pentax menus. Remember that Pentax options are truly vast and camera is extremely customizable.

Let me start.

I use my K3 II now mainly for sports...but prior to K1 purchase was using it as all around camera.

So what works for me.

BACK BUTTON FOCUS:

How to enable:

Page 4 under Camera:

Button Customization - AF button set to AF2 (AF with shutter release button is disabled so AF is performed with AF button)

Under Custom Functions Page 1.4 - AE-L with AF Locked set to option 2 (ON) - AE is locked when the focus is locked

Now specific SPORT configuration options (although All Around for me) that has worked well for me:

Always use AFC (AF button + wheel to change from default AFA - we want to be in continuous mode)

Continuous Shooting - set to H (High) - we want to capture up to those 10 fps... speed (Up arrow to select from Main screen)

AF mode - I use 9 user selectable points (red square instead of white) (AF button plus wheel to select). This way it is easy to control and keep moving object in frame (eg conrtol using Up/down/left/right arrows if needed).

Custom Functions Page 3.16 1st Frame Action in AF.C I have found that option (3) works best for my style of shooting - eg Focus-Priority (Start shooting after adjusting Focus). Basically first shot only after focus obtained, make sense

Custom Functions Page 3.17 Action in AF.C continuous Default is Focus Priority, which is rely on Camera "brains". I want to be more in control here i set it to 3 - FPS-Priority Maintaining capture frame rate takes priority. Cause I use back button focus and much smaller focusing frame (9 points) it is a lot simpler to keep object in focus.

Next one I personally don't touch 3.18 Hold AF status - keep it off. Basically if object is outside 9 points, I want camera to throw focus away and dont try to re-focus for me...You could change it to other options if you'd like, but by my observations it will be slower.

Now here are Miscellaneous K3 II options I have found useful:

Let's start from Custom Function Page again page 4.23 Save Menu Location -  I set it to (2) - Save menu location.  Basically once you are getting out from menu camera remembers where you have been, Extremely useful for my type of usage.

Memory Card Option (Camera 1st page) - both 1 and 2 cards are used for RAW

Image Capture Settings (Camera 1st page) - set to RAW and RAW File Format set to PEF (not DNG !) Reason. I use Capture One as PP software, and PEF file support is vastly superior to DNG files according to profiles.

Horizon Correction (Camera 2nd page) - is set to TRUE. It is the MUST setting for Landscape photography, where camera will correct Horizon on the fly, rather than losing pixels in post processing.

Memory (Camera Page 4) - I uncheck EV compenstation and Flash Exposure Compensation, Digital Filter, HDR Capture and Pixel Shift from it, I don't want to keep those values once I restart the camera.

This is pretty much it.

Very very similar settings on my K1 as well (different UI though but same settings), could post if there is interest.

Thanks.

Also, under Live View option add "Composition Adjustment" as enabled. Great to have, for 3D/Architect.

I have never used live view. My wife gave me àn external screen that you can use for macro shots. Haven't used that either.

Okay, similarly K1 settings.

Very complex camera indeed, but I have truly tried to set it up similar way to my K3 II

BACK BUTTON FOCUS

To Enable:

Camera Page 5 AF Button set to AF2

Custom Functions Page 2 8 - AE-L with AF Locked set to 2 (AE is locked when focus is locked)

Now other miscellaneous (sport like) settings:

Camera Page 1 . Phase Detection AF - AF Mode -set to AFC (or AF Model button + Wheel to set to AF.C) - Continuous shooting for me all the way

AF Mode Button + Wheel to set AF points (same as K3 II) set to 9 user custom RED ones

Camera Page 1 Phase Detection AF 1St Frame Action in AF.C set to Focus-Priority

Camera Page 1 Action in AF.C Cont set to FPS

Camera Page 1 Hold AF Status set to OFF

Continuous Shooting - set to H (High) - we want to capture up to those 4.5 fps (or 6 in crop)... speed (Up arrow to select from Main screen)

Now the rest:

Camera Page 2 Memory Card options (Both to RAW) From time to time I may change to RAW 1st and JPG second especially if I want to beam up (via WIFI) jpg image

Camera Page 2 Crop -  I ALWAYS keep it to FF (full frame). I'd rather see vignetting in viewfinder (if I would accidentally attach ASPC lens, then have perfectly good lens (example my old Sigma 70-200) report back (via Default Auto Settings) as APSC lens and ended up using it only as 16 MP image in crop :-(

Camera Page 4 - Horizon Correction set to ON, it is unbeatable option for landscape photography

Camera Page 4 - Composition Adjustment set to ON as well, great at 3D effects under  Live View (Tilt Shift simulation)

Camera Page 5 Instant Review Display TIme (Change from 1 to 3 seconds i'll explain later)

Camera Page 5 Histogram Display set to True as well (reason is that otherwise you'd have to switch Histogram On and Off while review picture, but this way it is displayed during preview and goes away w/o blocking the entire screen)

Camera Page 5 Memory Remove EV Compensation, Flash Exposure Comp, Composition Adj - I don't want to have those values set after camera has been turned off

Settings Page 1 Sound Effects - Turn Off we want to be quiet :)

Custom Functions Page 1 6 Bulb mode set to 2 (Press Shutter to start exposure, Press again to stop)

Custom Functions Page 2 12 One Push Bracketing set to 2  (Press shutter release once takes given number of bracketed shots)

Custom Function Page 4 23 Save Menu Location set to 2  (Save Menu Location)

Hope this helps !

Pls let me know if you have any questions.

Nice. Happy to help out. My recommendation, switch to Back button focus early, and practice with it for day or so. I'd say 30-35% quickness comes from BBF alone.
